The Bower-
Strawbale ADU
The Bower is a new construction project that introduces strawbale building to Greensboro, North Carolina. Designed as a small home on family land, it provides a dedicated space for its owner to live, create, and practice her art.
The home is built with locally grown wheat straw, used in bale form within the walls to create a highly insulated building envelope. Like any well-designed wall system, the straw is carefully sealed and protected from moisture and pests. The result is an airtight, energy-efficient structure—featuring a vapor-permeable membrane, rainscreen, and wood siding on the exterior, with natural clay plasters finishing the interior walls. And the home is certified as an ENERGY STAR® home.
A key feature of the project is the earthen floor, which replaced a conventional concrete slab. Warm and comfortable underfoot, it also significantly reduces the building’s overall carbon footprint.
Beyond performance, strawbale construction offers unique opportunities for creativity and connection. The natural materials invite artistic expression, foster a sense of biophilia, and reflect the many hands that shaped the space—resulting in a home that feels both grounded and deeply personal.
